Debt collectors calling and you're confused about what to do? Experts say get it in writing.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — When a debt collector calls, try not to freak out. Yes, debt collector calls can surely be stressful, but here are some expert tips for how to handle them.

One of the most important tips from the experts at Penny Hoarder is to never, under any circumstances, give away any personal information or confirm that you do, in fact, owe money. They say that doing those things could make matters worse.

Instead, ask the debt collector to contact you in writing.

According to Penny Hoarder, when a debt collection agency contacts you in writing, they're legally required to include specific information This information includes the amount you owe and the date you initially took on the debt in question.

However, receiving correspondence in writing allows you to get the debt collection agency's full business name. When you have that, you can then do some internet digging to find out if the agency calling you is indeed legit.

Remembering these two important tips when a debt collector calls you can alleviate problems that could arise otherwise.
