If your garage door opener is on your car visor, it could make you a victim of crime

There's a wave of car break-ins in North Carolina. Here's how to protect your ride.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — According to research from the insurance company ICBC, here are three of the top items thieves are looking for when they break into a car: smartphones and tablets. Make sure not to leave them in sight from the windows. Second designer sunglasses. Those are easy to pawn for quick cash. And the third one is the scariest: garage door openers. They want them so they can use the address on your car registration in the glove box and then break into your house. That's why police recommend that instead of keeping your garage door opener on your visor - stash it under your seat or in the center console.

Remember that hiding all your valuables and locking the doors are the best ways to prevent a car break-in.

Here’s a reminder about why that's so important. A WFMY News 2 viewer sent video showing a guy that she says came around to the back of their house in Sunset Hills and tried to get in one car. It was locked, so then he went to another one and started looking for stuff to steal. She says the camera alerted them, so she went to pound on the back window and the guy ran off.

This comes as Greensboro police are also looking for someone they say is tied to more than 10 car break-ins. Those break-ins have been along Wendover Avenue over the past three weeks.
