The real reason you should update your phone's operating system

New emojis are here, but that's not the only reason you should update your phone.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — From high-fives to hearts, new emojis are here. According to Emojipedia, there are 21 of them for you to include in your next text -- if you download iPhone's iOS 16.4 new beta update.

We tend to think operating system updates are only done to upgrade features or install new ones, but experts say the majority have to do with fixing security issues that have been exposed within the current operating system.

While wanting to send the so-called "shaking face" emoji might be the motivation you need to get the software update, know there's typically a much better reason for staying up to date.

Tech experts say the updates you get from time to time on your phone are essential for fixing major holes in code that could cause big-time problems should you ignore them.

The bottom line is if you're not updating your phone with the latest operating system available, you could be making yourself an easier target for cybercriminals to steal your identity or worse.
