WAXHAW, N.C. — Are you getting besieged with robocalls saying it’s the Social Security Administration? A lot of people are complaining about this lately, saying they are getting called up to five times a day.
“It’s clearly a robocall and clearly a scam,” said Dan Thomas who is fed up with receiving the calls. “And it’s that same message all the time saying that my social security number has been compromised,” Thomas added.
Thomas runs The Athletic Barn in Waxhaw, NC, which is home to travel baseball and softball teams of all ages.
The calls he is getting are pitches to get him to share personal information, which he says he never does.
“A lot of people might not know this is a scam and think it’s real, which is a big problem. When I get these, I think geez, someone might be trying to open credit cards,” Thomas said.
“Fear is exactly their hook,” Tom Bartholomy from the Charlotte Better Business Bureau said. The calls come from all different area codes, including many from area code 509 which is eastern Washington state.
The Social Security Administration will never call you and you should not call the number they leave you if they leave a voicemail. The calls are fishing for victims, so don’t bite.
Experts often advise let it go to voicemail. Answering it engages. If you do answer and it’s a real person, hang up on them. Remember, government agencies don’t call you and they never should be threatening you.
