CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If you’re experiencing sticker shock every time you go grocery shopping, that’s for good reason. Groceries continue to cost more than they did just a year ago. The latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the cost of buying food has increased 4.7% year over year.
That’s why it’s so important to find ways to save money while still getting the food your family needs.

Here are six strategies to help you spend less on groceries from the folks at The Penny Hoarder:
- Farmers Market
Score stellar prices on produce and other locally sourced items while supporting your neighbors at the same time. - Weekly ads
Make this part of your routine to find sales, promotions and seasonal incentives. - Coupons
Just like weekly ads, coupons need to be part of your routine to save money. Find them in weekly ads and on manufacturer websites. - Dollar stores
Shop shelf-stable foods and household products to take advantage of the savings. Just know inventory will typically vary week to week. - Store brands
Experts say you can save as much as 25% buying a store-brand product versus the name brand. The good news is many grocery chains have not only increased the number of store-brand products being offered, but they’ve also improved the quality of those products. - Buy in bulk
Warehouse clubs offer some of the best prices per-item Just make sure you’re only buying what you’ll actually use.
