MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — Residents in Mecklenburg County's six towns and other unincorporated areas will soon be able to apply for help with any mortgage payments missed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The county government will open up applications for its Mortgage Assistance Payment Program on April 4, thanks to funding from the CARES ACT provided through the Community Block Development Grant. Low-to-moderate income residents who are eligible and have been impacted by the pandemic can get up to six months of consecutive payments to use toward mortgage payments, including principal, interest, taxes, and insurance.

Homeowners are eligible if they reside in one of the towns or unincorporated areas of the county, have a household income of up to 80% Area Median Income (AMI) prior to the pandemic's hardship, and were already current on their mortgage prior to said hardship.
Additionally, homeowners must be able to prove a loss of income tied to the virus or another piece of qualifying criteria, such as increased costs related to childcare. Proof can include a reduction of work hours, a job loss or furlough; or illness with COVID-19, be it the homeowner themself or an immediate family member.
