Dollar store do's and don'ts

What to buy and what to skip so you can shop at your local dollar store like a pro.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Shopping at a dollar store is a popular strategy to save money and it’s only become more prevalent in this economy.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, we’re still paying more for just about everything.

The Bureau's "All Items Index," which measures prices paid by consumers for goods and services, increased by 4% for the 12 months ending in May 2023. While that's the smallest 12-month increase since March 2021, it’s still an increase.

That’s why it makes sense that more and more people are shopping at dollar stores to save cash where they can, but be warned, not all buys are created equal.

Follow these do's and don'ts from the experts at AARP to get the most bang for your buck at a dollar store.

Do expect some items to be more than a dollar.

AARP says while prices remain much lower than typical retail outlets, dollar stores aren’t immune to inflation which means costs for some items have increased.

Don’t buy tech items or things with a lot of parts.

According to AARP, a dollar store might not be the best place to buy items you need to last.

Do earn rewards.

Most dollar stores take manufacturer coupons as well as store coupons. Use them as well as apps to save even more money.

Don’t buy things you don’t need.

Just because it’s inexpensive, doesn’t mean you should buy it.

Do shop for the store brand.

Many dollar stores have private label items that tend to be priced lower than a lot of the name brands you’ll find at the store.

Don’t shop in just one store.

Every store has different inventory so make it a habit to check different locations to find the best items.

Do shop in the morning.

If you want the best selection, you’ve got to go first thing in the morning when the store opens.
