'I own this place' | Charlotte woman told to leave her home last minute due to repairs

She said her and her neighbors were told they won't be reimbursed for their accommodations either.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte woman is being forced to pay to stay in a hotel after her condo's management group said she had to be out while repairs were being made to her unit.

The woman, who is requesting to remain anonymous, said she was only told a few days ahead of time she would have to be out of her condo. Not only that, but she has to pay for her hotel stay, despite the inconvenience. 

“I don’t have four days of hotel money just laying around," she told WCNC Charlotte. "I put everything into buying this place."

The repair is to the landing balcony between two condos at the Carmel Village II in south Charlotte.

“This is my first impression of homeownership," she said. “I was upset; my neighbors are upset."

She received an email from the condo's management group on Oct. 27 stating she would have no access to her condo from Monday through Thursday of this week.

While the email states it's a friendly reminder, she said she didn't even know repairs needed to be made in the first place. 

“Give us notice in other ways and give us multiple notices, so that we don’t miss it," she recommended.

She said her and her neighbors were told they won't be reimbursed for their accommodations either. And, at a time when homeownership should be a key to building wealth, she said she's now set back financially.

“This is my home," she said. "I own this place. You can’t kick me out of my home, especially with no notice, no compensation." 

WCNC Charlotte did reach out to the HOA and property management of the condos and has yet to hear back. WCNC Charlotte was able to get in contact with the contractor of the project, though. He said the repairs they are doing are a high priority for safety reasons and they did give residents a notice a week prior.
