MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. — For the latest breaking news, weather and traffic alerts, download the WCNC Charlotte mobile app Starting Wednesday, Mecklenburg County residents who are fearing their upcoming winter heating bills can apply for help from the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services.
The program, which is called the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, gives federal money to those in low-income households who need immediate help paying their heating and energy bills.
To qualify, households must have at least one eligible U.S. citizen or legal resident, must be responsible for the heating cost associated with their residence and their income must be at or below 130% of the federal poverty limit.
Applicants will be asked to provide ID, a recent utility bill, their social security number and proof of income such as social security benefits, self-employment income, unemployment benefits, child support or earned income. People can still apply if they do not have all that information available at the time of application.
Residents who qualify will receive a one-time payment of $300, $400 or $500 depending on their needs.
Applications started Wednesday for residents over the age of 60 or disabled residents who already receive help through the Division of Aging and Adult Services. The applications open up to other residents on Jan. 4, 2022. Funds will be available through March 31, 2022 or until funds are exhausted.
