New Year's resolution to work out more? Skip the gym and stream Netflix instead

Why spend money on a gym membership when there are streaming workouts on a platform most people probably already pay for?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Getting in shape is so many people's New Year's resolution year after year. According to a national survey, 23% of people say they wanted to get healthier in the New Year.

But a costly gym membership might not be the only option for those wanting to get swole this year. Believe it or not, Netflix might be the solution.

The streaming service has teamed up with Nike to bring virtual fitness classes to the platform.

According to CNET, there are a handful of Nike Training Club programs currently streaming with more expected to be added throughout this year. From high-intensity training to yoga; there will be a variety of workouts available with classes suitable for different fitness levels.

For those who already subscribe to Netflix, the classes are included in the monthly fee, no matter the subscription plan level.

You can stream WCNC Charlotte on Roku and Amazon Fire TV, just download the free app.

For those who haven't subscribed to Netflix, plans currently start at $6.99 a month.

According to one study, only 77% of people held to their New Year's resolution for one full week and less than 20% kept the habit after two years. Other studies put those numbers even lower.

For those who want to keep their resolutions this year, here are tips to stick to them:

  • Be specific and realistic - Abstract goals are hard to visualize and hard to achieve. Your resolutions should be concrete and attainable, says the Cleveland Clinic.  It's also important to be realistic with yourself. Make sure your resolution is attainable. If you're starting a running routine for the very first time, a marathon might not be a realistic first goal, but a 5K could be.
  • Have a plan - Document your successes and failures. Consider keeping a journal or even using an app related to your resolution -- there is an endless supply of apps for things like exercise, food tracking or budgeting.
  • Reward yourself - Our brains are wired to respond to positive reinforcement, so rewarding yourself can help build those new habits. That might look different for different people, like a long, hot shower after a run, a quiet meditation session or a piece of candy. Eventually, the good habit itself will trigger that positive feeling.
