North Carolina sports betting decreases in June

There's an 18% tax on gross wagering revenue in the state, which means $40,302,263 went back to the state from betting in June.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new report shows North Carolinians are spending less money on sports betting than when it first launched.

The latest numbers from the North Carolina State Lottery Commission showed during the month of June, North Carolina residents or visitors bet $398,251,464. Account holders won $354,742,263 during that same period of time.

There's an 18% tax on gross wagering revenue in the state, and since the gross wagering revenue was $40,302,263, a little over $7 million went back to the state from betting in June.

Other states where sports betting has been legal for more than a year have seen similar dips in wagering during the summer months. For example, in Colorado in 2023, people bet just $281 million during July, then it shot up to $306 million in August. And in September, when the football season started, bets skyrocketed to $512 million.
