CHARLOTTE, N.C. — According to Laura Van Sickle from Closets by Design, people usually only wear about 25% of their wardrobe.
She said by cleaning out closets, people might be able to save money by stressing less and saving time.
The professional organizer said she understands people have a hard time parting with certain things in their closet. However, she added it might be easier to do if you know you can make money or, at the very least, make an impact on someone else's life.
"You're going to donate to somebody who's now going to be able to use it, and you make their life better," Van Sickle said. "It makes it a lot easier to get rid of something."

Van Sickle said there are several websites buying new and used clothing. She also suggested trying your local thrift shop or Facebook Marketplace.
She offered other tips to get organized:
Group like items together
For example, separate what are dresses for work and dresses for "play."
Group clothes according to color
Van Sickle said one benefit of this tip is being able to easily find what you're looking for in your own closet.
"Instead of running out and spending more money on another red dress, why not shop your own closet?" Van Sickle said. "If you keep everything together by color, I bet you're gonna find something that'll work for you."
Check for tags
If you have items with tags still on, it could mean money back in your wallet
"If it's been awhile and you haven't worn it yet, think about it," Van Sickle said. "There's probably a reason why."
She suggested once you do get your wardrobe organized, stay on top of it by cleaning it out once or twice a year to make sure everything stays how you want it. That way, even the maintenance is faster and easier to do.
