CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A study from Security.org says more than 21 billion packages were shipped out last year. Unfortunately, not every parcel reached its intended recipient.
That’s why Security.org is sharing some tips to avoid being a victim of package thefts this holiday season.
The numbers are staggering. Security.com says 17% of Americans have had a package stolen in the past three months. A new report shows package thieves poached more than $8 billion in merchandise over the past year.
Here are some tips to avoid being a victim of porch pirates:
1. Make it clear that your property is under surveillance
Motion-detecting lights and doorbell cameras can keep eyes on your porch from anywhere.
2. Bring packages inside promptly
Limiting the package’s time in the open is the most effective way to keep thieves at bay.
3. Schedule your shipments wisely
Most online retailers and delivery companies will allow you to schedule specific delivery timeframes – take advantage by choosing hours when someone will be present.
If you find yourself a victim of package theft, make sure you contact the seller and shipper as soon as possible, check the claim instructions on their website and follow the necessary steps to report a stolen package.
