Password protection: The do's and don'ts

Follow these steps to keep your information safe.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — You need a password for just about everything these days. That’s why it’s so important to make sure the password you pick is actually doing what it’s intended to do; protect your accounts and personal information.

Here are some password do’s and don’ts to keep your information safe according to the experts at The Penny Hoader:

DO change it up! Experts suggest changing your passwords every few months.

DON’T use the same password for every account. Every account needs its own unique password. This limits the scope of your exposure in the event you get hacked.

DO keep your passwords private! Sharing them puts you at risk.

DON’T write them down on Post-its or scrap paper that can easily be found.

DO use a password manager to keep your login information secure.

DON’T use simple passwords like, “12345” or “password.” Experts say a strong password should be a combination of both lower and upper case letters, numbers, and special characters.

DO add protection by using two-factor authentication on every account it’s offered. This additional step provides another layer of security.
