CHARLOTTE, N.C. — American Airlines just announced that the cost of checking a bag on one of its flights is increasing. A checked bag will rise from$30 to $35 online and $40 if purchased at the airport.

This move is leaving people to ask where's the money as they plan for their next vacation.

So how can people save in other ways? Going, a money-saving travel site has some tips you can do the next time you board a plane.

  • Use the 24-hour rule to cancel if the price drops - if you book directly with an airline at least seven days before your flight, you can cancel or change your flight free of charge within 24 hours. so if you book your flight and the price goes down within the 24-hour window – you can cancel the old flight and book the new, cheaper one.
  • Act fast to snag mistake fares - a mistake fare is when an airline accidentally discounts a ticket to a price lower than they intended. it can mean huge savings for you – up to 90% off. but these fares can disappear quickly, so you have to spot and snag them fast!
  • look at budget airlines but don’t forget to check other carriers - while many people assume budget airlines, like Frontier or Spirit will be the cheapest option.. that’s not always true. be sure to all airlines before booking your flight and also know, that budget airlines will likely have hidden fees – so make sure you factor those in the cost when checking out.
  • Bring your own food! most budget airlines don’t offer meal services – and if they do, anything you bring from home will not only be cheaper than what they’re offering.. but it’ll probably taste better too!
