CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Paying bills is an unfortunate reality for all of us, but there are a few ways you can get ahead of those monthly payments so you aren't forced to pay more than you absolutely have to.
First, did you know you have the power to negotiate your bills? It's true. There are several methods you can take to spend a little less on those monthly expenses and many of them are as simple as asking for a little help.

Here are some tactics you can try:
- Credit Card: Experian, a data analytics and credit reporting company, says you can actually negotiate a lower interest rate on your credit card. Now, it's important to know, that your credit card issuer doesn’t have to agree, but if you have a history of paying on time and your credit score is strong, your chances of them saying yes is higher.
- Cable, internet and cellphone bills: None of these companies want to lose your business. That means you can use that power to possibly negotiate a better deal. Forbes suggests doing your research and looking at competitors' rates. If you're offered a certain rate with another company, you can turn around and use those numbers to leverage a better deal with your existing provider.
- Insurance: Consumer Affairs says you can ask about bundling policies for your home auto or other policies. You can also ask about increasing deductibles or see if they offer any incentives for things like safe driving. Most car insurance providers advertise these deals so you should be able to get a quote easily.
The main takeaway here? Don’t be afraid to ask, because if you never ask, the answer will always be no.
