CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A new report shows that since 2020, the average screen time for American adults has increased by over 60%.
WCNC Charlotte is helping you get ahead of your screen time with some tips to manage your phone addiction.
An AllConnect report shows internet users spend almost seven hours online daily, and if we break down those numbers by age, children 8-10 years old spend about six hours a day in front of a screen while children 11-14 spend nearly nine hours a day.
Around the world, people spend more than 40% of their waking hours looking at screens.

Tips to manage your screen time
- Check your screen time on your device. You can find out how much time you’ve spent on your device in your settings. Experts say learning how long you typically spend online or staring at a screen can give you a good place to start when you’re trying to “cut down.”
- Resist screen time when you’re bored, distracted or stressed. Grabbing our phone or turning on the TV can be the default when you’re bored. But experts say next time you’re looking for something to do, consider other alternatives to using your phone.
- Don’t use your devices while you eat. Studies show most Americans are on their phones while they eat a meal, experts say eliminating electronics at mealtimes can help you reduce your screen time.
