Holiday shoppers expect to spend much less this year, survey finds

Nearly half of shoppers surveyed said they plan to spend less than $500 this holiday season.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — With inflation putting the squeeze on holiday budgets across the country, a survey found that nearly half of U.S. shoppers have a firm budget in place for their wish lists.

Consumer website CardRates found that 46% of shoppers have their holiday budget in place. Only 18% of people surveyed said they don't have plans to create a budget for their holiday shopping plans.

The survey also found that 45% plans to spend somewhere between $250 and $500, including gifts, food and everything else. In a surprising twist, 6 in 10 consumers said they're dedicating 50% or less of their budget to purchasing gifts, instead focusing on different ways to maximize their money during the holidays.

Several Wake Up Charlotte viewers also plan to spread their money around over the holidays, with responses ranging from greeting cards to groceries and Christmas decorations. Some people said they plan to reuse old decorations and won't use any money on new items to celebrate this year.
