Want to learn a new skill? A Charlotte business wants to help

Skillpop has been in the business of helping people thrive since 2015.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — If one of your resolutions this year was to learn a new skill, a Charlotte business is here to help.

Skillpop has been in the business of helping people thrive since 2015.

From life skills to new hobbies, the company brings in professionals to teach it all. WCNC Charlotte is taking a closer look at what people are doing to get ahead this year.

Haley Bohon, Skillpop founder, said learning is something we all did growing up. But as adults, all of a sudden that seemed to be missing.

"I could find a yoga class, I could find fitness events or networking meetups -- but if you wanted to learn photography, or learn watercolor or something like that I couldn't find an easy place to just go and try something," Bohon said. "So that's where the idea came from."

Watercolor classes are now among the top learning experiences that people are signing up for. Besides letting your inner Van Gogh have a go of it, Bohon said with the new year, others are signing up for something more practical.

"We also see people really love the personal development kinds of classes, budgeting, finance, all those things that no one teaches you growing up," Bohon explained. "Then all of a sudden, you're like, 'Wait, I do want to know how to buy a house,' or 'I do want to know how to invest my money.' Those classes tend to do pretty well, too."

She said real-estate investing classes have become more popular in recent years, especially since the pandemic. With classes averaging $30 to $40, many students sign up multiple times.

"A lot of people will come in for one thing and they might come back for similar types of topics," Bohon said. "They fall in love with a watercolor teacher, they might sign up for every class she ever does."

Classes are offered from Camp North End and NoDa to the west side and on South Boulevard.

Bohon said they could use new finance and personal development experts as they're back to in-person classes and doubling their number of venues. Click here to learn more.
