A new study reveals it pays to look at your monthly credit card statement. Here's why

Half of American credit cardholders say they've disputed a claim.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Checking your credit charges is one way to know where your money is going and to see if there are any unfamiliar charges.

A new study from Lending Tree says nearly half of credit card holders are disputing a claim. But do people actually get money back?

Lending Tree's findings reveal 96% who do dispute claims are successful in getting those claims resolved.

However, Lending Tree found about 17% are filing fraudulent disputes, with some lying about a claim on a legitimate charge.

Filing a claim might be extra work, but the Lending Tree survey found that most people say it's worth it, with over 90% getting it resolved within a month and 84% having them resolved in their favor.

In addition, Lending Tree points out that ignorance isn't always bliss -- only 44% of cardholders review their credit card statements monthly for unauthorized charges.

The sooner you reach out to your credit card company, the sooner you can get it resolved.
