CHARLOTTE, N.C. — RXO, a high-tech freight transportation broker, has announced plans to expand operations at its headquarters in Charlotte's Ballantyne neighborhood. The company says it will invest $13.7 million and create 216 new jobs over the next several years.
The expansion project will increase its current statewide workforce from 759 to 975 full-time employees. The new positions, which will be added over the next three years, are expected to have an average annual salary of $89,769, surpassing the current average wage in Mecklenburg County of $84,797, according to data shared by both the city of Charlotte and the state of North Carolina.
Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, "This is not just an expansion; it's a significant milestone for our city's growth and economic development. This investment will create jobs, drive innovation, and enhance our community's prosperity."
Governor Roy Cooper also welcomed the news, emphasizing the state's attractiveness for business growth.
"RXO's decision demonstrates the strength and competitive advantages of North Carolina's infrastructure, business climate, and highly skilled workforce."
RXO, established as a public company in November 2022, specializes in tech-enabled brokered transportation.
The project is supported by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state's Economic Investment Committee. Over the 12-year term of the grant, the project is estimated to grow the state's economy by nearly $498 million, according to Cooper's office. The JDIG agreement authorizes potential reimbursement to the company of up to $1,636,500, spread over 12 years, contingent on meeting job creation and investment targets.
This expansion is part of a series of recent economic development successes for Charlotte and Mecklenburg County. Over the past two years, the city and county have collaborated on multiple projects, including relocations and expansions of companies such as Siemens Energy, TTX, and Albemarle Corporation. These efforts have collectively brought more than $440 million in capital investment and 1,291 new jobs to the area, according to city statistics.
