YORK COUNTY, S.C. — The South Carolina gas tax will increase by two cents starting Monday, July 1.
The tax, which was approved in 2017, is being implemented to improve roads across the state. The tax will increase by two cents each year until 2022.
The funds raised by the increased tax will pay for state highway maintenance, repairs and improvements. South Carolina leaders say the tax will generate around $70 million per year and they hope to fund $1 billion in road and bridge repairs across the state.
