South Carolina shoppers hit stores for Tax Free Weekend

Certain items will not have taxes on them from August 2-4.

Shoppers in South Carolina will be crowding the stores this weekend to get some last-minute shopping done before the school year. It's because August 2-4 is officially Tax Free Weekend in the Palmetto State. It's a chance to get key items without the state's regular sales tax tacked on.

The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDR) said last year that South Carolina shoppers purchased more than $30.4 million of items tax-free. This weekend, Ellen Williamson told WCNC Charlotte she's aiming to get all she can.

"Clothes, shoes, anything I can get my hands on," she said.

South Carolina's sales tax is 6%. Robert Durham, a dad in York County, said he chose to hold off on shopping because of the savings he'd get.

“I almost went yesterday and I looked at the email and saw it said the second through the 4th, so I was waiting for today for sure,” he said. “I need all the sales, it’s rough. Pretty much being a single father, any help I can get I’ll take it."

The SCDR says while shoppers will be saving on items from computers and printers to pillows and towels, this tax break excludes items like smartphones, jewelry, cosmetics, and furniture.

Other items eligible to be tax-free include school supplies, diapers, purses, and earbuds and headphones.

Tax Free Weekend first started in 2000, when the South Carolina legislature signed it into law.
