Charlotte congresswoman wants to help people who defaulted on student loans

The Clean Slate Through Consolidation Act would remove default records from the credit history of borrowers who defaulted on federal student loans.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rep. Alma Adams, a Democrat from Mecklenburg County, is pushing new legislation aimed at helping borrowers who defaulted on their student loans

Adams introduced the "Clean State Through Consolidation Act," which would remove default records from the credit history of federal student loan borrowers who have consolidated their defaulted loan(s). Adams joined three other Democrats to propose the bill.

"Student debt continues to remain a serious impediment for those aspiring to pursue higher education," Adams said in a statement. "It shouldn't have to be that way. Education is empowerment, and we should continue to pursue policies which empower students."
