Discounts to avoid this summer

A popular promotion could be doing more harm than good if you're trying to save money at grocery stores this summer.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — With the start of summer, grocery bills for many people are going up with kids no longer in the classroom. As people look for ways to save, there's a discount that may be doing more harm than good.

It's a trend called "spaving."

A report from USA Today found shoppers may be seeing more deals this summer season that will offer you a discount for buying more groceries. Its a deal that's been around for decades, but inflation is killing the bargain.

The numbers back it up.

Eggs are one of the more expensive items on the grocery list, but federal data shows a dozen eggs cost about twice what they did in 2019. Citing that same data, the report found overall consumer prices rose by nearly 20% between 2019 and 2023.

There are at least three factors to consider.

First, do the math. Count up how much you're spending with and without these supposed deals, then purchase accordingly.

Two, stay away from the perishables. This needs flexibility -- especially if you have a bigger family to feed -- but buying fresh foods in bulk can lead to waste.

Third, stick to your budget. The 50/30/20 rule is a classic standard. That means 50% of your household income is for necessities, and should help you put together a grocery bill budget.
