Tax rules to know for charitable giving

Making donations, whether it's for the holidays or to give to those suffering from international conflicts, comes with need-to-know tax rules.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Giving money to good causes, like helping those suffering from the Israel-Hamas conflict, is causing confusion for some.

On top of making sure your money is used the right way and getting to reputable people, there could be other tax and legal pieces to consider.

A Forbes report notes those wanting a tax deduction for contributions should ensure any donation goes to a qualified organization. This can be churches, synagogues, temples, and mosques, or nonprofits, schools, and hospitals.

WCNC Charlotte is always asking "where's the money?" If you need help, reach out to WCNC Charlotte by emailing money@wcnc.com.

There's also a fact checking tool for you to verify for yourself: A tax exempt organization search tool can be found on the IRS website.

As long as you know the organization's name, you can search it and the tool will tell you if the group is properly registered.

It's worth keeping in mind, religious groups like local churches don't have to be on this list. Another factor many may not consider is even though you may be donating to help people internationally, the organization you are giving to has to be based in the U.S. to receive a deduction for it.

That doesn't mean you aren't allowed or able to give money to other groups, but if the charity or nonprofit isn't based in the country you wont be getting any credit.
