Gaston County officials issue warning about tax scam

Businesses have reported receiving letters titled “Distraint Warrant” requesting unpaid tax debt.

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — The Gaston County Tax Office has issued a warning to business owners and residents about a new tax scam.

Businesses have alerted the tax office about fraudulent letters requesting thousands of dollars in unpaid tax debt.

The letters are titled "Distraint Warrant," and they say that if a tax debt is not settled, authorities may suspend licenses, take away benefits, or issue penalties.

Gaston County tax bills are not set to go out until July.

“With the real tax bills going out in July, we really wanted to make sure we informed our citizens about this scam,” Chelsea Tarbush, Tax Director for Gaston County, said. “They need to know that these letters are not from us. Do not send any payments to them.”
