CHARLOTTE, N.C. — With temperatures dipping in the 20s this past weekend, a lot of you probably turned on the heat in your home . Many people will likely see the effects on their next utility bill.
But WCNC Charlotte is helping you get ahead with ways you may be able to lower your bill.
When it comes to paying utility bills, many people just accept the amount they owe. But Consumer Affairs said you could lower your bill if you ask the right questions.
- Time-of-use plan: Consumer Affairs said to ask your utility company about a time-of-use plan. Some companies will offer plans where rates will vary based on the time of day. They say shifting energy-intensive activities like washing clothes to off-peak hours, like 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., can save you some money.
- Go paperless or use auto-pay: Doing this helps the utility company, so in turn they may be willing to give you back some of the money it saves if you sign up for one of those things. It may not happen, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.
- Cut your own deal: Never hesitate to ask about discounts, special rates and loyalty incentives. Don’t leave anything on the table.
