CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It used to be that the standard job interview was done in person. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic happened and just about everything moved to a virtual process instead.
Fast forward to now, and even though we're no longer on lockdown, many companies have kept the hiring process online. No doubt, it's a different experience, especially for someone who has never interviewed virtually before. So what separates those who get the job from those who don't?
Turns out, it's direct eye contact.
Resume writing service TopResume spent a month this summer surveying 330 hiring managers, recruiters and HR professionals in the U.S. to rank the worst things a candidate can do during a virtual interview.
At the top of the list? Avoiding eye contact or staring into space.
The good news is it's something that can be fixed. Whatever device you plan to use for your interview, practice using it beforehand. Do a mock interview with a friend or family member to make sure you know where the camera is on your device so you can look directly into it during the actual interview.
Other deal breakers for employers? Sitting in a messy room, leaving inappropriate tabs or apps open when screen-sharing, using an unprofessional background or being interrupted by family members.
Preparation is key when it comes to getting the job so do what it takes to build your confidence before the big day.
