Why booking flights in January might not save you as much money as you think

But when is the best time to book a flight to snag the best deals?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — With temperatures expected to drop below 20 degrees this weekend, many people are probably dreaming of getting out of the cold and into somewhere more tropical.

But when is the best time to book a flight to snag the best deals? Some reports online are telling travelers to book their 2024 travel in January to secure the best flight deals, but is this true?

WCNC Charlotte is always asking "where's the money?" If you need help, reach out to WCNC Charlotte by emailing money@wcnc.com.

According to the travel site Going, booking this far out in advance might not save you as much money as you think. Data from Going shows that last year, only one month produced fewer deals than January.

Going said this year, travelers will see similar airline pricing as last year. However, if you’re looking to score a deal, Going has compiled a list of some of the best travel destinations for 2024:

  1. The Bahamas: More than 3 million tourists visit the Bahamas by cruise. But with a higher cruise tax set to kick in in 2024, it’s about to get pricier to visit the country by water, so taking a flight could be cheaper.
  2. The Dominican Republic: Thanks to new routes to Punta Cana and Puerto Plata from airlines like American, Delta and Southwest, those of us on the East Coast can get flights there cheaper.
  3. Fiji: The popular islands in the South Pacific are touting a big tourism year in 2024. Its national carrier has transitioned to new aircraft with 25% more capacity, allowing more visitors per flight from North America.

Some good news, Going said they believe 2024 won’t see major fluctuations in airfare pricing and overall.
