1 dead, 1 injured in Lake Norman jet ski crash

The teens were riding jet skis when they collided.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One teenager has died and another is recovering from injuries after a jet ski crash on Lake Norman Sunday evening, the North Carolina Wildlife Commission said Monday.

A group of four teenagers were riding two jet skis around 5 p.m. Sunday when they two vessels collided, NC Wildfire said. Officials said each jet ski was carrying two people.

A 16-year-old has died as a result of the crash, according to officials. Another teenager is recovering from injuries, having broken a leg. Both drivers are alright.

Investigators are still working to determine how the two jet skis collided.

Officers are calling this a “tragic accident.”

"I would simply encourage folks to keep their head on a swivel and look out for the vessels around you in the event that they don't see you," said Sergeant William Laton with the North Carolina Wildlife Commission.

He said the teens were all wearing life vests and not drinking any alcohol.

"Sometimes we assume that the other boat see us and we assume they're going to move and we just can't do that," Laton said. "We've got to be prepared to make a maneuver to prevent a collision."
