CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Saturday marked the 25th anniversary of Chateau "Chad" Canty's murder. And 25 years later, police still haven't made an arrest in the case.
To show support for Canty's family, dozens gathered at York Memorial Cemetery to remember a life taken too soon.
"It's said," said Thelma Canty Richardson, summing up 25 years' worth of emotion is two simple words.
Supporters joined hands to honor and remember Richardson's firstborn son. He was murder November 28, 1990.
"Seems like it was yesterday," said an emotional Richardson. "All I want is justice. I want to be able to close this chapter."
Canty was gunned down on West Trade Street alongside his best friend. Their murderer is still on the loose. Richardson has called Dave Osorio, a detective with CMPD's cold case unit, hoping there's been a break in the case at the end of November for the last 25 years.
"To this date the case remains unsolved," Orosrio explained.
Police don't think the shooting was random. They believe whoever pulled the trigger was involved in an altercation with the victims.
Nonetheless, Richardson took time Saturday to reflect and celebrate her son's life with family and friends by her side.
"It's like a missing link that has been broken and I would love for it to be repaired," said Richardson.
