Al Roker: 'This is a dangerous cold' coming to the Carolinas

The TODAY meteorologist told Carolinians to be careful ahead of the Arctic blast.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Al Roker was in our neck of the woods, warning Carolinians to take this week's Arctic blast seriously.

“People have said, ‘Oh well, it’s winter. It gets cold.’ Yeah it does. But not this cold. This is a dangerous cold,” he said.

The TODAY meteorologist stopped by NBC Charlotte Monday. He said folks should dress accordingly and be careful when temperatures drop dramatically Tuesday night.

“Folks whose heating systems aren’t working that well, they turn on the stove. They try to use space heaters that they haven’t really used properly. Fires can occur,” Roker added.

The mountains are expected to get two to four inches of snow. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper urged drivers to be cautious on the roads.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) said crews were using brine to treat parts of I-40 and roads in Burke and Rutherford counties. Crews will treat Charlotte area roads after Tuesday’s rain.

NCDOT said it will likely have a few trucks staged to check overpasses because bridges and overpasses are the first to freeze.

While the weather in other parts of the country remind us things in the Carolinas could be worse, lows in the teens and twenties aren’t anything to take lightly.

“For a lot of millennials, this will be the coldest weather they’ve ever seen,” said Roker.

Just a reminder it can always be worse. #cltwx #ncwx #scwx #ArcticBlast
