CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. — Cabarrus County Schools will be closed for students on a traditional school year calendar on Wednesday, May 1, according to school officials.
Hickory Public Schools also announced they will be closing on May 1, due to the number of HPS teachers who plan to participate in the education rally in Raleigh.
HPS said it will be an optional teacher workday.
Multiple school districts across North Carolina are closing on May 1, and many teachers statewide are expected to be attending the teacher rally in Raleigh.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools designated May 1 as an optional teacher workday, waiving attendance requirements for students.
Iredell-Statesville Schools are staying open May 1, but teachers can request the day off.
The North Carolina Association of Educators said their demands for this year's rally include a 5 percent raise for staff, increased minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour, expanded Medicaid, and more school psychologists and support staff.
Last year, the streets of Raleigh flooded with teachers pushing for better pay and funding. That rally drew an estimated 19,000 people, forcing 40 school districts to close.
No make-up day will be required for Cabarrus County Schools.
