WAXHAW, N.C. -- A case of MRSA was discovered at Waxhaw Elementary School on Wednesday, according to officials with Union County Public Schools.
An email has gone out to parents at Waxhaw Elementary as the Union County School District has confirmed a case of MRSA at the school.
According to the district, classrooms and common areas have been disinfected according to protocol.
Here is some information about MRSA:
It's a type of staph bacteria, resistant to several antibiotics.
It can be passed through direct contact with an infected wound, or by sharing personal items - like towels or razors.
MRSA can cause bloodstream infections, pneumonia and in some cases even death.
According to a medical professional, if you've got someone that has MRSA and they come into contact with a surface right before you come into contact with it with an open area, then that transmission can take place.
The Union County School District's website lists ways to avoid catching the infection. The best protection against MRSA is to wash your hands frequently. Also, make sure to clean and cover any cuts and breaks in the skin to minimize exposure.
