Charlotte native to run in District 9 special election

With Matthew Ridenhour's decision to run, four candidates are now looking to challenge Democrat Dan McCready in the new election for North Carolina's 9th congressional district.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte native announced he will be running in the new District 9 election.

Matthew Ridenhour, a former Mecklenburg county commissioner and a Marine veteran, enters a crowded field of Republican candidates.

So far, the other Republican candidates in the special election are Union County Commissioner Stony Rushing, Fayetteville business woman Stevie Rivenbark and Raleigh Republican David Blackwelder.

So far, Dan McCready is the only Democrat running.

McCready lost to Republican Mark Harris in last November's election, but the State Board called for a new election after allegations of absentee ballot tampering in two counties.

So far, four people have been arrested in connection to the election fraud investigation.
