CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police are honoring two of their own who died in the line of duty 12 years ago on this date.
"As you go about your day, please take a moment to think about Officers Shelton and Clark and their ultimate sacrifice," CMPD tweeted.
On March 31, 2007, Officers Jeff Shelton and Sean Clark were shot in the parking lot of Timber Ridge Apartments near Milton Road while responding to a domestic disturbance call. Both men died at Carolinas Medical Center the next morning, April 1.
"The community responded to the officers' deaths with an outpouring of grief, offers of support, and thousands of dollars in donations for the slain officers' families," CMPD tweeted. "Thousands of citizens lined the funeral procession routes."
A jury of 12 men and women found Demeatrius Montgomery guilty of first-degree murder in the officers' deaths. He was sentenced to life in prison because the judge removed the option of the death penalty early in the case.
Shelton was on the force for six years and left behind his wife, Jennifer Sparks Shelton.
Clark had been with the department for 14 months. He was survived by his wife, Sherry Jones Clark, who was pregnant at the time, and his son who was 3-years-old.
