Community mourns after 16-year-old Myers Park High School student passed away in sleep

The unexpected death is hitting the swim community especially hard, as the 16-year-old was a standout athlete.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NBC Charlotte has learned more about the Myers Park High student who passed away over the weekend.

Benjamin Hager died in his sleep overnight Friday.

The unexpected death is hitting the swim community especially hard, as Hager was a standout athlete.

The 16-year-old made the varsity swim team at Myers Park High in addition to swimming with SwimMAC Carolina in Ballantyne.

The day before he died, Hager practiced with his teammates at Swim Mac --they tell NBC Charlotte that Hager seemed fine.

“He was one of the healthiest, fittest kids I’ve ever seen in my life,” said Wes, Hager’s teammate.

Hager’s family described him as optimistic, saying he often spoke of the future and his plans to become an entrepreneur.

At 14, he had done just that, starting a BBQ business and riding his bike to deliver his homemade sauce to customers.

Hager leaves behind his mom, dad and two younger brothers. His family has created a scholarship fund in honor of him. Donations can be made at Myers Park Presbyterian Church.

A celebration of life for Hager is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday at Myers Park Presbyterian Church.
