ALBEMARLE, N.C. – A local police officer is being hailed a hero after he helped save a disabled man from a house fire.

On February 16, Officer Josh Laws with the Albemarle Police Department responded to an emergency call in the 1000 block of Henry Jay Street.

When Laws arrived, he saw that the home was on fire with visible smoke and flames coming from inside. Neighbors told him that someone was inside, so Laws went in to rescue them.

Laws says he heard 69-year-old Ralph Ashe inside coughing and found him. Mr. Ashe is legally blind, which made it difficult for him to exit the home on his own, police say.

Both Ashe and Laws were able to escape the home without serious injury.
