LANCASTER, S.C. — A 10-year-old boy was shot and killed late Friday afternoon in Lancaster County, the sheriff's office said.
It happened around 4 p.m. at a mobile home park on Coastal Way off Memorial Park Road in Lancaster.
Deputies said they found the victim on the ground between two mobile homes, and bystanders were trying to help him.
A family member identified the victim as 10-year-old Dylan Twitty.
The boy appeared to have "a gunshot wound or wounds" and was taken to the hospital where he died, investigators said.
An autopsy will be performed on Sunday.
"No one has been taken into custody for the shooting at this time, but it does not appear to have been a random act," the sheriff's office said.
A heartbroken Brenda Twitty came out to mourn the death of her 10-year-old cousin, placing a cross where he was shot.
"It just saddens me that the world has come to this," she said.
Deputies said the victim lived nearby, and it was not known whether he was the intended victim.
"It doesn't matter who we kill, were just killing each other daily," Brenda Twitty said.
The family is grieving, but they hope his memory lives on for others.
"He was a bright child, with straight A's," Brenda Twitty said. "His school is gonna miss him cause he was such a good kid, with a beautiful smile and now we're going to be absent from that smile."
The Lancaster County School District confirmed Twitty was a student at Erwin Elementary. The school district says the crisis team was at the school Monday morning.
"It is a sad day for Lancaster County School District during this unfortunate loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family along with our Erwin Elementary family."
