CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A teenager was arrested in a brazen attack against a 53-year-old woman at a Charlotte park.
The assault happened in broad daylight at Nevin Community Park in north Charlotte. Police say 16-year-old Ernesto Hernandez-Campos is facing a list of charges, including attempted robbery and sexual battery.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department did not say where exactly in the park the woman was targeted, but there are some secluded areas. The victim called for help around 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
Brandi Moss says she often comes to the park for her lunch break.
“That’s extremely unsettling,” Moss said.
Police say the teenager was armed with a gun when he targeted a 53-year-old woman.
“Most people are bringing their kids after school to enjoy some time off and burn some energy off of kids," Moss said. "Now you have to worry about people attacking you in broad daylight."
According to the police report, several items were seized during the investigation. That includes a revolver, ammunition, and marijuana.
Some park visitors are now thinking twice about where they spend their time.
“It’s so secluded from the main path, there's not a lot of eyes that come through here, so definitely makes you aware of your surroundings,” Moss said.
Hernandez-Campos is also charged with possession of a handgun by a minor and possession of marijuana. He’s being held in the Mecklenburg County Jail on a $14,000 bond.
