ROCK HILL, S.C. — WARNING! GRAPHIC CONTENT; DISCRETION ADVISED

Two people were arrested on animal abuse charges in Rock Hill, police said.

Officers were called to 518 Keels Ave. around 11:30 a.m. Sunday. They found a dead puppy in the backyard and, after getting a search warrant, discovered three other dead puppies: two more in the yard, one in a trash can, and one in a laundry basket.

A female dog was also found in the backyard investigators believed was the mom of the puppies.

"It appeared as if she was eating the litter to survive," police said. "No food or water was observed for the dogs, and it appeared as if the dogs were starved."

Maurice Phillips, 40, and Sandra Gallman, 50, were charged in the case. York County Animal Control took in the adult dog.
