CHARLOTTE, N.C. — An armed home invasion led to a shooting at an apartment complex near SouthPark Mall, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said.
Two suspects broke into the home at the Colony Apartments on Sharon Parkway on Thursday just before midnight, police said. During the home invasion, a 22-year-old man was shot in the chest.
Investigators said the suspects broke into the home through a sliding glass door.
"It’s scary that it's right here," said neighbor Shannon Griffin.
Even during daylight, NBC Charlotte found little activity in the largely residential area. Neighbors said the property has been sold, and residents are moving out.
"There’s no cars here because most people are moving out, they're tearing these down," said Griffin.
Police said two armed suspects forced the victim from one room to another and shot him in the chest.
"I feel so sad because he's so young," said neighbor Harry Susanto.
"With a lack of eyes and lack of people being around, I could see there would be more opportunity to do something like that," said Griffin.
According to the police report, the suspects stole marijuana. It happened in an area where neighbors said they feel safe.
"I feel very comfortable around here, walking my dog," said Griffin.
"This is like a safe neighborhood. It's SouthPark Mall; it's like a block away from SouthPark Mall," said Susanto.
Investigators did not release information about the circumstances leading up to the crime. No arrests were made. The victim was expected to survive.
