CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A 72-year-old woman is thankful to be alive after she was dragged across a south Charlotte parking lot during a terrifying carjacking Monday.
The incident happened Monday afternoon at the Arboretum shopping center. After getting away with the vehicle, the suspects led police on a high-speed chase that ended in a crash in South Carolina, where they were arrested.
Susan Day put up quite a fight during the attack. She said she had one arm on the car and used the other arm to scratch the driver, all while being dragged about 30 feet.
“I screamed ‘help,' so a lot of people came and tried to help me,” said Day.
Day has the battle wounds to show for her fight. She has a fresh scrape on her foot and a gaping hole in her shoe.
“I was hanging onto to the car and I kept saying to him, ‘stop, stop’, and I used my left hand to try to scratch his face so maybe he would go away,” said Day, recalling how she fought back while being dragged across a McDonald's parking lot.
She was leaving McDonald's around 3 p.m. when police said Jason Mosley and Melissa Werts targeted her.
“Broad daylight, you don’t think about it,” said Day. “(I) started to put my leg in the car, and all of a sudden under my arm, a hand came up and he grabbed the keys out of my hand.”
In hindsight, Day said she saw the couple inside the McDonald's before the carjacking.
“I saw this couple that was kind of strange, sitting there, eating a piece of pizza,” she said.
Day knows she might see them next in a courtroom.
“I’m not really looking forward to that, but I’ll do what I’ve got to do,” Day explained.
Both suspects are facing multiple charges including robbery and conspiracy. Mosley is facing additional counts of reckless driving, hit-and-run, felony fleeing to elude, and failure to heed blue lights/siren. They are expected to be extradited to North Carolina.
