ALBEMARLE, N.C. — WCNC Charlotte has chosen to use this mugshot because the suspect has active arrest warrants, and because police have urged caution to the public.
A man was found shot to death in Albemarle early Friday morning, police said. Later in the day, they identified both the victim and the suspect accused of killing him.
Albemarle Police were called to a welfare check on Elizabeth Avenue around 1 a.m. on Friday. When officers arrived, they found the victim dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
The department identified the victim as 47-year-old Duane Lamont Perry, who lived in Albemarle. Police said he was a visitor at the residence he was found in.
Police also said they were looking for a suspect: 49-year-old Otis Eugene Burns. He had active warrants out for first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.
Albemarle Police said Burns turned himself into law enforcement Saturday morning.
This is the first homicide to occur in the City of Albemarle since September 2023, according to Albemarle Police.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to call Albemarle police at 704-984-9500. Anonymous witnesses may also call 704-984-9511.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
