ALBEMARLE, N.C. — A man is accused of stealing from an Albemarle store while armed.
The Albemarle Police Department said officers responded to a tobacco and vape shop along US Hwy. 52 on Thursday, just after 3 p.m. The suspect reportedly brandished a handgun at the clerk and left, driving away with an undisclosed amount of money.
Albemarle Police said officers found a suspect vehicle matching a provided description and approached it, but the driver sped off. Officers ended the chase because the suspect reportedly drove dangerously. The car was found unoccupied later and taken as evidence.
An arrest was made just a day later. Officers said 43-year-old Michal Daniel Cochrane was taken into custody without incident on Friday. He's now charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, and larceny of a motor vehicle.
Note: WCNC instituted a policy in March 2021 regarding the broadcast or posting of mugshots.
WCNC will only air or post a mugshot if the person has been formally charged with a crime and in a few other cases. The exceptions include: If it appears the person could be a danger to themselves or others or if they are wanted by authorities; to differentiate between people with a common name; if the photos could encourage more victims to come forward. The news-editorial leadership may also decide to use a mugshot based on the severity of the crime(s) committed and/or the level of public interest in the crime and ensuing criminal proceedings.
