Sheriff: Suspect who shot at deputy during fight killed in shooting

The suspect allegedly fired a handgun at an officer during a struggle. The officer returned fire, killing the man.

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — A suspect was shot and killed during a fight with deputies in Alexander County late Sunday night, investigators said. 

The incident happened around 10 p.m. at a home on Dusty Road in Taylorsville when deputies were attempting to serve warrants for the suspect's arrest.

When deputies arrived at the house, they found that man outside. The suspect allegedly ran when deputies gave him commands to surrender. At some point during the chase, an officer caught up with the man and they started fighting, according to the Alexander County Sheriff's Office

During the fight, the suspect allegedly shot at the officer, who returned fire and killed him. 

Neither the officer nor the suspect have been identified at this time. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is investigating the case, which is standard protocol for shootings involving officers. The officer was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. 

No further information was released at this time.
