CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A deadly officer-involved shooting is under investigation in northwest Charlotte.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police were called to investigate a suicide attempt in the 3200 block of Timberbrook Drive around 1:30 p.m. Friday.
Upon arrival, CMPD said an officer found 27-year-old Charlie Shoupe showing signs of distress.
"We think mental distress," CMPD Chief Kerr Putney said.
Neighbors said they watched in horror as Shoupe slashed his arm open with a knife. Firefighters said Shoupe told them he wanted police to shoot him.
Police said Shoupe was armed with a knife, charged at an officer and refused to drop his weapon. That's when the officer fired his gun.
"The officer fired his weapon at least once striking the subject," Putney said.
CMPD tweeted informing the public of the shooting.
"Our thoughts are with all involved," CMPD tweeted.
According to CMPD, all officers on the scene were okay. Shoupe was rushed to the hospital where he died.
CMPD said Officer Daniel Flynn pulled the trigger. He was hired on May 15, 2006 and is assigned to patrol with the Freedom Division. Officer Flynn was placed on paid administrative leave which is standard protocol.
According to what appeared to be Shoupe's facebook page, the 27-year-old talked about his struggles with sobriety. In the past three months, police were called to his apartment seven times.
CMPD said they are investigating the incident as well as the conduct of the officer to make sure no policies were violated.
