'Very unusual': Teen shot, killed at quiet south Charlotte apartment complex

The victim was found dead near the intersection of Ballantyne Commons Parkway and Lancaster Highway, police said.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A teenager was shot and killed in Ballantyne on Tuesday morning, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said. 

Multiple agencies responded to a reported to a welfare check call at an apartment complex on Wynhollow Downs Lane, which is near the intersection of Ballantyne Commons Parkway and Lancaster Highway, around 8 a.m.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said the incident is being investigated as a homicide. Maj. J.D. Thomas said officers believed the victim was sleeping in a vehicle when they arrived. They quickly determined the person, who has since been identified as 17-year-old Aryan Singh Jaswal, had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Medic. 

Thomas said investigators are trying to determine exactly when he was shot. 

"This is a very quiet apartment complex," he said. "It's very unusual for us to have a crime like this out here."
