Dozens of shots fired during apparent drive-by in Belmont, police say

Officers found 57 shell casings in the street and four bullets inside a home after an apparent drive-by in Belmont late Sunday night.

BELMONT, N.C. — Dozens of shots were fired outside a home in an apparent drive-by shooting in Belmont late Sunday night, police said.

Belmont police responded to a report of shots being fired in the area of Nixon Road near Armstrong Farm Drive and Rachel Anne Drive around 11 p.m. When officers arrived, they found bullet holes on the outside of two homes. A witness told police they heard about 20 gunshots before a vehicle sped away from the neighborhood.

Officers recovered 57 shell casings in the street, according to Belmont police. Officers also found four bullets inside the home during a search. Luckily, no one was hurt during the incident, police said.

Javon Kelly was sitting on the couch doing homework late Sunday night when he heard noises outside.

“At first, I heard it coming from that direction, so I knew it was close, but like, during the end of the shooting, I heard impacts inside the house," Kelly said.

He said he ran to the kitchen and ducked behind the island to avoid the bullets.

“This round ripped through my grandmother's picture and struck here, hitting the banister," Kelly said.

WCNC Charlotte learned about this incident when a viewer in the area contacted us saying it's the third time in recent months that police have been called to the neighborhood to investigate an incident at one of the homes involved in Sunday's shooting.

Some neighbors said the intended target of the shooting was the house next-door to Kelly's. WCNC Charlotte's Austin Walker spoke with the son of the homeowner. He didn't want to go on camera and wouldn't answer questions as to why he thinks this happened.
